Lent - A Time for Deep Listening
“O that today you would listen to God’s voice; harden not your hearts.”
– Psalm 95
“What is given is secret even from you until it rises and flowers within you.”
— David Whyte, Songs for Coming Home
The psalm of David from our Scriptural tradition which we have sung in Lenten liturgies since our youth and the voice of today’s British poet and naturalist David Whyte both call us to Listen – to go deep within. The theme song for our International Presentation Assembly in India (November 2008) puts it this way:
The cry of the earth, the cry of the poor,
Can we listen! Listen!
The voices are different - The song is the same.”
— Miriam K. Martin, pbvm
How open are our hearts to hear the voice of our God
Deep within us-
In the beauty of our world-
In the pain of our world-
In the faces and stories of those made poor-
In our own faces and stories?
Where might we be called to personal and communal transformation,
if we but Listen . . . Listen . . . with softened hearts?"
